Orchestra Mentorship Program

Students Play to Their Strengths With Selection to Orchestra Mentorship Program
Posted on 03/12/2021

Six students from Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts were selected for the distinguished New World Symphony Side-by-Side Concert and Workshops after submitting virtual auditions.

The New World Symphony is a training orchestra in Miami led by artistic director Michael Tilson Thomas. It is a training ground for the nation's next wave of classical musicians, and by being chosen, the following students will get to work alongside the Symphony Fellows to learn more about their roles and responsibilities in an orchestral setting:

Aaron Abbey – 11th grade, trombone.

Haley Avery – 10th grade, french horn.

Hannah Avery – 10th grade, clarinet.

Nathan Goldin – 9th grade, french horn.

Samuel Malave – 12th grade, flute.

• Kara Ravaschieri – 9th grade, flute.

“I am extremely proud, and this also helps our ensembles at Dreyfoos,” said Evan Rogovin, the school’s Director of Bands. “The information and leadership skills these students learn in the side-by-side are paramount to our organization's success.”

The opportunity will allow the students to participate in master classes, get private lessons with the Symphony Fellows, and see real-world examples of the music business. Additionally, the students perform in a concert with the Fellows.

The entire experience usually takes place in person at the New World Center in Miami over a two-week period. This year, students record their respective performances that are later edited into a virtual ensemble. Despite the different approach necessitated by the pandemic, the students are still poised to benefit from the experience.

“It is my hope that our students will come back to Dreyfoos demonstrating successful individual rehearsal techniques and strong leadership skills so they can mentor our other students and their peers,” Rogovin said. “In addition, I want them to have a greater appreciation for the arts community as a whole, and to know that this community can help them achieve their goals!”
